After the switchover, what will happen to the released spectrum?

Current analogue transmission is not an effective use of broadcast space or spectrum. To give an example in simple terms, one 'channel' which currently transmits one analogue television signal will be capable of carrying 6 digital television signals, increasing choice for all viewers. Ofcom's objective is to maximise the use of this resource for the benefit of UK citizens and consumers.

The Digital Dividend Review (DDR) is an Ofcom project to determine the most effective use of the radio spectrum that will be released through digital television switchover. Ofcom estimates that the benefit to the economy from the use of the spectrum is likely to be around £5bn-10bn in total over 20 years. Potential uses for the released spectrum could include high definition services, mobile television and other new services.
